The story of Mavrick
Samuel Maverick took a herd in payment of a debt in 1845 and left it unbranded, whether from indifference or principle; his neighbors' shorthand became an English word within a generation, and by the 1880s it meant a politician who would not follow the party. A 1986 film revived the name. Mavrick appears in the registers in current use.
Meaning
unbranded, independent
From Samuel Maverick, a nineteenth-century Texas rancher who did not brand his cattle; neighbors called any unbranded stray a maverick, and the word came to mean an independent. The surname itself is from the Welsh or English. The word's origin is documented and unusually well attested.

About 1 boy in 13,139 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 23,398 for Mavrick itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
