Our story of Arin is a story of a short sound three traditions reached independently. Irish had Éirinn, the dative of the island's name, which English took as Erin. Hebrew had Aharon, whose meaning no one has recovered — likely Egyptian, possibly not Semitic at all. Armenian had its own Arin. American families spell all of them Arin, use it for both sexes, and the registers cannot tell them apart.
