Where it comes from

Our story of Larnell

The ell at the end of American men's names looks French and mostly is not. It came off English surnames — Darnell, Mitchell, Purcell, Terrell — which had been given as first names for a century before anybody started using the ending on its own. Once loose, it behaved like any other suffix: attached to a syllable, it produced a name that sounded established and was brand new. The French -elle, which looks identical, is a feminine ending and went into women's names by a completely separate road. Two endings with the same letters, one from a surname stock and one from French grammar, sorted by sex and by nobody's decision in particular.

Meaningnot established

Not established

No source. The front cannot be tied to Arnold, Darnell or Laurence with any confidence, and the ending is a suffix rather than a word. The name means what its bearer's family meant by it, which is a real answer and not a dictionary one.

Larnell sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1957, with 21 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Larnell sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The back stress gives it a strong finish and protects it from clipping.
  • It is read correctly on sight with nothing difficult in it.
  • It is rare while sounding entirely established.
What to consider
  • Lanell, Larnel and Darnell are all nearby and his will be written as one of them.
  • The spelling is recorded for a few girls, but nearly every child with it is a boy.
  • There is no meaning in either half.
