Where it comes from

The story of Mavrik

The story is unusually well documented for a word: a Texan landowner declined to brand his herd, neighbors began calling any unbranded animal a maverick, and within a generation the word had shifted from cattle to people who would not run with the herd. It entered American given names in the 1990s and rose steeply after that. The Mavrik spelling is newer still, dropping the middle e to make the name look as compact as it sounds.

Meaning

an unbranded calf; hence an independent-minded person

The word comes from the surname of a nineteenth-century Texas rancher whose cattle went unbranded, so that unbranded strays came to be called mavericks.

Mavrik sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2022, with 76 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Mavrik went to 38 boys in 2025, but Mavrick, Mavryk and Mavric are the same name said out loud. Together the 4 spellings went to 130, which makes it the 798th most-given boys’ name of the year — 2,330 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 13,139 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 44,949 for Mavrik itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The word is in every English dictionary, so the sound is completely familiar.
  • Mav is a ready short form that works on a team sheet and on a résumé.
  • It has a documented, unusually specific origin — a real range, a real dispute about branding.
What to consider
  • Maverick is the spelling everyone knows, and this one will be rewritten on most forms.
  • The word carries a personality with it, and the child will be measured against it by strangers.
  • The aviation film association is strong and shows no sign of fading.
