Where it comes from
From bæcestre to Baxter
The story of Baxter
Bæcestre named the woman who baked, as webbestre named the woman who wove. Over time the ending lost its feminine force and became simply a job word, and the trade names hardened into surnames in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. Baxter is especially common in the north of England and in Scotland. Like Dexter and Archer, it moved into American given names on the strength of its sound as much as its history.

The trade-off
- A documented occupational meaning, which very few surname-names can claim so cleanly.
- The x gives it a hard center and Bax gives it a very short informal form.
- It has been spelled one way for seven hundred years.
- It is a common dog's name in English-speaking countries, and that will be mentioned.
- The -ster ending puts it in a set — Dexter, Chester, Foster — that can sound of a piece.
