Emitt
Masculine · “Germanic ermin”
Emma is not a name in its own right. It began as a clipping of the first element of Germanic compounds in Erm- and Irm-, the same element that stands at the front of Hermelinda. Emmett is Emma with a diminutive ending, so it descends through a woman's name that was itself a fragment.

The story of Emitt
Germanic naming built compounds from two elements, and the ordinary way to make a familiar form was to keep one element and drop the other. Emma is the front of Ermintrude, Ermengarde and Irmgard. Otto is the front of Otfrid and Odalric. Bert is the back of Albert and Hubert, and also the front of Bertram. Hugh is the whole of one element and none of another. These clippings then became independent names, were given to children who had no compound behind them at all, and eventually produced their own diminutives and surnames. Emma reached England with the Norman conquest, was carried by the mother of Edward the Confessor, and became common enough to found a surname family: Emmett, Emmott, Empson and Emms all descend from it, all of them metronymic.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
