The story of Emillie
The French -ie and English -y endings both descend from Latin -ia, and the two languages simply settled on different spellings for the same unstressed final vowel. So Marie and Mary, Emilie and Emily, Sophie and Sophy, Lucie and Lucy, Rosalie and Rosaly, Amelie and Amely are pairs, not separate names, and English chose -y for names it had absorbed early and kept -ie for those it borrowed later or wanted to keep looking French. The result in American use is that the -ie spelling now signals French even when the name is thoroughly English, and parents choose between Emily and Emilie for that reason alone. A third spelling, -ee, arrived later still and signals neither, which is how one unstressed vowel came to carry three different social messages.

Latin aemulus, rival or striving
Emillie is a respelling of Emilie, the French form of Emily, from the Roman clan name Aemilius, usually connected to aemulus, a rival, though like most gens names its origin is not secure. The doubled l is an American addition. Emily is not related to Amelia, which is Germanic despite the resemblance. The peak is 2004.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names.
