Emalynn is a modular name: a front taken from Emma, an ending taken from Lynn, and a join made in America. The -lyn ending has been the single most attachable element in modern American naming — Adalynn, Jaelynn, Brooklynn, Madelyn, Emalynn — and it works because it is short, unstressed and belongs to no one. Its peak is 2015.

How old is the name Emalynn?

Emalynn first appears in US birth records in 2003 — 22 years ago. The typical Emalynn is a kid of about 10 — this name's wave is very recent. About 800 people named Emalynn are estimated to be alive in the US today.

When was the name Emalynn most popular?

Emalynn peaked in 2015, reaching #2259 nationally. Today it ranks #5722, 3,463 places below that high. See the whole 2015 chart.

Where it comes from

The story of Emalynn

The -lyn ending entered American girls' naming in the mid-twentieth century with Marilyn, Carolyn, Roselyn and Evelyn, in which it was usually part of a longer inherited name rather than an addition. It then detached. From about 1990 American parents began treating -lyn and -lynn as a free-standing ending that could be added to almost any front to produce a new name: Adalynn, Emmalyn, Jaelynn, Kaylyn, Braelynn, Emalynn. The device is so productive that the American top thousand now contains dozens of names that share it and nothing else. Emalynn is one of the more transparent of them, since both halves remain readable.

Meaningscholars disagree

a compound of Emma and Lynn

Both halves have real histories. Emma is Germanic, a short form of names beginning with ermen, 'whole, universal', and it came to England with Emma of Normandy in the eleventh century. Lynn is Welsh in origin, from llyn, 'lake', by way of the place name and surname, and it became an American girls' name in the 1940s. Whether Emalynn is a genuine compound of the two or simply a sound assembled to be pleasant is not recoverable, and both descriptions are honest.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Emalynn went to 21 girls in 2025, but Emmalyn, Emmalynn and Emalyn and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 5 spellings went to 404, which makes it the 587th most-given girls’ name of the year — 5,135 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 3,978 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 76,537 for Emalynn itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Emma and Em are both available as fallbacks and both are entirely ordinary.
  • The pronunciation is obvious on sight, unusually for a name of this kind.
  • Both halves have genuine documented histories even if the compound is modern.
What to consider
  • At least four spellings share the sound and hers will be written wrong routinely.
  • The single m is the less common choice and will be doubled by most writers.
  • The -lynn ending dates the name closely to the 2005-2020 window.
