Where it comes from

The story of Emmalin

The Royal Frankish Annals record that in 772 Charlemagne's army destroyed the Irminsul, a wooden pillar the Saxons held sacred, and took the treasure around it. What the word meant is disputed, but the element irmin or ermen is well attested in Germanic names, where it intensifies: great, whole, universal. It gave Ermintrude, Irmgard, Erminhilt and Ermanaric, and German speakers clipped the long ones to Emma, which then traveled on its own. Emma of Normandy, married to two kings of England and mother of two more, brought it to England in the eleventh century, and Jane Austen gave it a second life in 1815. Emmalin belongs to the most recent American stage, where the base name was so common that parents began extending it.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Emmalin went to 9 girls in 2025, but Emmalyn, Emmalynn and Emalyn and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 5 spellings went to 404, which makes it the 587th most-given girls’ name of the year — 9,520 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 3,978 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 178,585 for Emmalin itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
