Where it comes from

The story of Eathan

English Puritans took their names from the Old Testament on principle, and they took the minor figures as readily as the major ones, which is how Ethan, Ezra, Enoch, Abner and Zebulon entered American use. Those names then stayed regional for generations: they marked New England, and later the frontier settled from it, rather than the country as a whole. Ethan Allen, who led the Green Mountain Boys in 1775, is the type case. The name's second life began in the 1970s and 1980s and had nothing to do with the first; by the 2000s it was among the most common boys' names in the United States, given by parents with no Puritan connection and usually no awareness of the Psalm. A three-hundred-year gap separates the two meanings the same spelling has carried.

Meaning

Hebrew eitan, enduring, firm

From Hebrew eitan, meaning firm, enduring or perennial, used of a flowing stream that does not dry up. Ethan the Ezrahite is named in the superscription of Psalm 89 and in the book of Kings as a byword for wisdom. The Eathan spelling is a modern American variant with no separate source; its peak is 2003.
