The story of Maximino
Maximinus was a Roman name borne by two emperors and by several early Christian bishops and martyrs, which carried it into Spanish and Italian. Spanish kept Maximino and it was well used in Spain and Mexico through the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. It reaches American records chiefly with Mexican families, and the shorter Max is available immediately in English.
Meaning
little greatest one
From Latin Maximinus, a diminutive of Maximus, itself the superlative of magnus, great; Roman naming built diminutives of family names freely, and the effect is affectionate rather than contradictory.

The Mcdonald test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Maximino's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Mcdonald climbed just as high around 1932, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Mcdonald's path sketches the road Maximino is walking now.

The trade-off
- A settled meaning with a documented Roman origin and a long Christian history.
- Max is available immediately as an entirely ordinary English short form.
- Every letter is said, so Spanish speakers read it correctly at once.
- Nine letters and four syllables is a great deal for early handwriting and for forms.
- Maximo, Maximino and Maximiliano are all in use and get confused.
- The diminutive of a superlative is a joke most people will miss.
