Our story of Dynasty
American naming has always taken words that mean success and used them directly, and the words change with the decade. The nineteenth century gave daughters Fortune, Precious and Charity. The twentieth added Queen, Princess, Diamond, Destiny and Unique. Dynasty belongs to that line and is one of its most ambitious members, because it does not name a virtue or a jewel but a whole line of power. Two things sit behind its American rise: the television series that ran from 1981 to 1989 and made the word ordinary in every household, and the enormous success of Destiny as a girls' name through the 1990s, which established the -y ending on an abstract noun as a normal shape for a name. Dynasty's peak in 2001 comes at the crest of that second wave rather than the first.
Meaning
A succession of rulers from one family
From Greek dynasteia, lordship or power, from dynastēs, a ruler, and ultimately dynamai, to be able — the same root as dynamic and dynamite. English took it through Latin and French in the fifteenth century. The reading is settled; the word means a line of rulers, not a single one.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Arnita test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Dynasty's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Arnita climbed just as high around 1956, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Arnita's path sketches the road Dynasty is walking now.
Dynasty sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
