Where it comes from

The story of Dori

Greek naming used ethnic and regional adjectives freely for women, giving Doris, Lydia, Ionia and Thessalia, and Doris was carried into English through the classical revival of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, becoming one of the most-given American girls' names of the 1920s and 1930s. Dori is a short form of it and of the unrelated Dorothy, which shares no root at all; the two have been treated as one family in English for so long that the distinction is now invisible. Dori's own best year in United States records is 1960, and it appears independently in modern Hebrew naming as a unisex name meaning of my generation.

Dorian woman, of Doris

Doris is the name of a district of central Greece and of an Oceanid, the wife of Nereus and mother of the fifty Nereids. The region's own name comes from the Dorians, whose name is not securely explained. A separate route makes Dori a short form of Dorothy, from Greek doron, a gift, plus theos, God, which is a completely different word.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Dori went to 17 girls in 2025, but Dory is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 24, which makes it the 936th most-given girls’ name of the year — 5,610 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 66,969 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 94,545 for Dori itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
