The story of Dondre
Dominus is the master of a household, and specifically of slaves, from domus, a house. Spanish and Portuguese took it as don and dom, an honorific prefixed to a first name and originally restricted to nobility and clergy; Italian uses don for priests and, in the south, for men of standing, which is where the criminal usage comes from. Portuguese Dom is the title of kings and of Benedictine monks. English borrowed the Spanish word in the sixteenth century, used it for Spaniards generally, and then applied it in Oxford and Cambridge to college fellows, a slang use recorded from the seventeenth century and now entirely respectable. The same Latin root gives dominate, dominion, domain, danger through Old French dangier, a lord's power, and the Italian and Spanish words for Sunday, the Lord's day.

Latin dominus, master or lord
Dondre joins Don to an -dre ending from Andre. Don may be from Donald, Scottish Gaelic Domhnall, world ruler, or from the Spanish and Italian title don, from Latin dominus, a master. Neither carries meaning into the compound. The peak is 1994.

Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Dondre's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Pascal climbed just as high around 1910, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Pascal's path sketches the road Dondre is walking now.
