The story of Disha
The ten directions are a fixed scheme in Hindu, Buddhist and Jain cosmology, and each is assigned a guardian. Indra holds the east, Yama the south, Varuna the west, Kubera the north, with Agni, Nirriti, Vayu and Ishana at the intercardinal corners, Brahma above and Vishnu or the serpent Ananta below. Temples are laid out on the scheme, mandalas are built on it, and rituals address the directions in order. The number matters: a system with only four directions describes a map, while one with ten describes a space, which is what a cosmology needs. The Sanskrit root behind the word means to point out or indicate, and it is the same root that produced Greek deiknumi, to show, and Latin dicere, to say, which is why the English words index, digit and dictionary are related to a Sanskrit compass point.
Meaning
Sanskrit disha, direction
Disha is Sanskrit for a direction, quarter or region of the sky, from a root meaning to point or to show. The same root gives desha, a country or region, and the English words digit and index are distant cousins through Latin. It is a modern Indian given name, common in Hindi and Gujarati-speaking families. The American peak is 2005.

The Laren test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Disha's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Laren climbed just as high around 1985, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Laren's path sketches the road Disha is walking now.
Disha sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
