The story of Dimitrius
Latin was the filter, and it left its marks everywhere. Greek -os became Latin -us, so Demetrios is Demetrius and Nikolaos is Nicolaus. Greek -on became -o, giving Plato and Apollo. Greek names ending in -es were often shortened, giving Aristotle and Sophocles unchanged but Homer from Homeros. The Greek letter kappa became c, so Kirillos is Cyril and kinema is cinema. Upsilon became y, chi became ch, phi became ph, theta became th. All of these are Roman spelling decisions, made for Latin readers, and English inherited every one of them without revisiting any. That is why a modern Greek looking at an English text finds his own names in unfamiliar dress, and why the standard English forms are closer to Cicero's Greek than to anyone's.
Meaning
Greek, of Demeter
Dimitrius is a spelling of Demetrius, the Latin form of Greek Demetrios, belonging to Demeter, the goddess of grain. Latin replaced the Greek nominative ending -os with its own -us, which is why almost every Greek name in English ends that way. The i in the first syllable follows the modern Greek and Slavic pronunciation rather than the classical one. The peak of this spelling is 1998.

Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Dimitrius's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Nathanel climbed just as high around 1929, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Nathanel's path sketches the road Dimitrius is walking now.
