Our story of Deontre
Webster's spelling reforms were a deliberate act of national differentiation. His 1806 and 1828 dictionaries dropped the u from color and honor, reversed -re to -er in center and theater, cut the k from musick, simplified traveler to traveler, and turned defense into defense. Not everything he proposed survived; tung for tongue and wimmen for women did not. But the reforms that stuck are precisely the ones that now mark a text as American, and the -re ending is among the most visible. Which makes its reappearance in coined names interesting. A name ending in -tre or -ntre looks French to an American reader, and that is doing exactly the work the speller wants: it signals that the ending is not an ordinary English -ter, and it does so by using a spelling American English formally rejected.
Meaningnot established
Not established
Deontre has no inherited etymology. It joins the American prefix De- to an -ontre ending of the kind seen in Deonte and Diontre. The -re spelling is a British and French convention that American English replaced with -er in the early nineteenth century, so the ending is visually foreign to American orthography by design. The peak is 1995.

The Eron test

Deontre's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Eron climbed just as high around 1972, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Eron's path sketches the road Deontre is walking now.
