The story of Demitrius
A surprising share of the standard Christian name stock is theophoric in the pagan sense: the names carry Greek and Roman gods inside them and were never purged. Demetrius holds Demeter. Dionysius, which gave Denis and Dennis, holds Dionysus. Apollonia and Apollinaris hold Apollo. Martin and Marcus hold Mars. Diana, Aurora, Phoebe, Hermione and Isidore all name deities or their attributes; Isidore is the gift of Isis, an Egyptian goddess, and it was borne by one of the greatest bishops of Visigothic Spain. The mechanism in every case is the same: a Christian of that name was martyred or canonized, and the cult of the saint made the name safe. Names without a saint attached, like Aphrodisia or Zeus-compounds, disappeared. The saint, not the meaning, decided which pagan gods survived into Christian baptism.
