Where it comes from

The story of Dariah

Darius the Great ruled the Achaemenid empire from 522, and the trilingual inscription he had carved at Behistun, in Old Persian, Elamite and Babylonian, functioned for cuneiform exactly as the Rosetta Stone did for hieroglyphs: because the Old Persian could be read, the other two could be worked out. The feminine Daria passed into Greek, Latin and then the Slavic and Romance languages, where it is a standard name; Russia in particular uses it heavily. The Dariah spelling with a final h is American and recent, part of the general fashion for adding an h to names ending in a, and its best year on file is 2014.

Meaning

holding firm the good

Old Persian Darayavaush, combining a verb meaning to hold or possess with vahu, good, giving something like he who holds firm the good. Daria is the feminine, and it is also the name of a fourth-century martyr venerated with Chrysanthus. The final h in this spelling is a modern English addition and carries no meaning.

Dariah sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2014, with 32 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Dariah went to 17 girls in 2025, but Daria, Dariyah and Darya and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 6 spellings went to 236, which makes it the 726th most-given girls’ name of the year — 5,820 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 6,810 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 94,545 for Dariah itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A settled Old Persian meaning and one of the great rulers of antiquity behind it.
  • Dasha and Ria are two short forms from two different traditions.
  • Common enough across Europe to be entirely familiar there.
What to consider
  • Daria without the h is the standard spelling everywhere else.
  • Russian and Western pronunciations differ sharply.
  • The added h dates the spelling closely to the last fifteen years.
