Danette
Feminine · “God is my judge”
Daniel was given a second name in Babylon. The book opens with four young deportees being renamed by the palace — Daniel becomes Belteshazzar, and his companions get the names we know them by, Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego. The text keeps using the Hebrew name for him anyway, which is quietly the point. Danette is the French diminutive built on it.

The story of Danette
Daniel spread through Christian Europe and produced women's forms in every language — Danielle and Danette in French, Daniela in Italian and Spanish, Daniella in Latin. Danette is the smaller of the two French ones, built with the -ette suffix that also gives Colette, Yvette and Jeanette. It entered American use in the twentieth century and became genuinely popular in the 1960s, peaking in 1966 at a level the name has not approached since.
Meaning
God is my judge
From the Hebrew Daniyyel, joining a word for judging to el, the older Semitic word for God. It is a complete sentence and a pointed one for a book about a man serving foreign kings: the claim is about whose judgment finally counts. The -ette ending is French and adds affection rather than meaning.

The Mozelle test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Danette's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Mozelle climbed just as high around 1920, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Mozelle's path sketches the road Danette is walking now.
Danette sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
