Mozelle
Feminine
Mozelle is overwhelmingly a girls’ name — 5,344 girls against 11 boys since 1880.
Mozelle has two roads into it and both are plausible. One runs from the Moselle, the river that gives its name to a French department and to a great many bottles of wine. The other runs from Moses, since American naming has long made women's names from men's by adding an ending. The record cannot separate them, and the South used both.

The story of Mozelle
American naming around the turn of the twentieth century produced a great many women's names ending in -elle and -ella, attached to almost any front element, and the South was particularly productive. Mozelle appears in the record from 1884 and peaked around 1920, given mostly to daughters and to a small number of sons. The z is the interesting letter: it appears in neither the river nor the Hebrew name, and it belongs to the American habit of writing what the ear hears rather than what the source requires.

Not established
If the name is from the river, the Latin Mosella is a diminutive of Mosa, the Meuse — so it means little Meuse, one river named after another. If it is a feminine of Moses, the Hebrew Moshe is itself contested: the Bible explains it as drawn out of the water, and Egyptologists read it instead as a common Egyptian element meaning born of. Neither road gives a clean answer.

moh-ZELL
Two syllables with the stress at the back, which the doubled l signals. The French river is said moh-ZEL as well, so the two agree — which is unusual for a name that reached America through the South rather than through France.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Leatha test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Mozelle's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Leatha climbed just as high around 1900, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Leatha's path sketches the road Mozelle is walking now.
Mozelle sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Mo works as a short form and suits a child of either sex.
- Both possible origins are real, and one of them is a river with a considerable reputation.
- The stress is fixed by the spelling, so the name is rarely said wrong.
- It is recorded for boys as well as girls, though nearly all are girls.
- It belongs firmly to the early twentieth century and carries that flavor everywhere.
- Mozell, Mozelle and Mosell all appear in old records, so the spelling has to be given.
- Its meaning cannot be given cleanly, because neither of its two possible parents has a settled one.
