The story of Dallie
Greek compound names could take their elements in either order and the results were treated as separate names, which produces several exact pairs. Dorothea and Theodora are both gift of God. Theophilos and Philotheos are both lover of God. Nikodemos and Demonikos both combine victory and the people. The pairs went on to have entirely separate histories: Theodore was carried by emperors and a pope, Dorothea by a fourth-century martyr, and no European language has ever treated them as one name. Hebrew does the same thing, giving Isaiah and Joshua from identical elements reversed, which suggests the flexibility is a property of compounding systems generally rather than of one language. The English familiar form Dolly involves a second and unrelated change, the substitution of l for r that nurseries perform on many names.

Greek doron and theos, gift of God
Dallie is most likely a variant of Dolly, itself a familiar form of Dorothy, from Greek Dorothea, joining doron, gift, to theos, God. The change from r to l in Dolly is a nursery alteration of the kind that also gave Sally from Sarah and Molly from Mary. Dallie may equally be a form of Dallas or Della. The peak is 1889.
