Dajour
Masculine
Dajour is given to both — 666 boys and 23 girls since 1880. See other names given to both
Color, honor, favor, labor. Noah Webster removed the u from all of them in 1806, and American English has been writing -or ever since. That makes an -our ending in an American name a visible foreign marker: it is either British, French, or chosen because it looks like one of those. Dajour ends in the French word for day.

Our story of Dajour
Our reading is that the -our spelling in this name is doing what the -re in Demontre does, borrowing the look of another language without borrowing anything else. Webster's reforms were deliberate and nationalist: he argued that an independent country should have an independent orthography, and he removed the u from the -our words, the k from musick, and the doubled l from traveled. They stuck in America and nowhere else. The consequence is that -our now reads to an American eye as either British or French, and using it in a name imports that flavor. Whether the family had the French word for day in mind is not recoverable and probably varies. What is certain is that the ending is chosen, not inherited, since the sound it represents could be spelled -jur, -jer or -shure without changing anything.
Meaningnot established
Not established
Dajour is an American formation joining the Da- prefix to an ending spelled -jour. The French word jour, a day, from Latin diurnum, is present in the spelling but there is no evidence it is present in the intention: the name belongs with Dajuan and Dashaun, whose endings are English sounds spelled variously. It peaks in 1997.
Pronouncing Dajour
duh-JOOR
Two syllables, stress on the second. Some families say duh-ZHOOR, giving the j its French value, which the spelling encourages. Both are in use.

Line the two peaks up, and Vincente's path sketches the road Dajour is walking now.
Dajour sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
