Daimon is Damon respelled, and the respelling lands on a real Greek word by accident: daimōn is the spirit or lesser divinity that Socrates said advised him. Damon is a different word entirely — but the eye cannot tell, and that coincidence is most of what the spelling does.

Where it comes from

The story of Daimon

Damon and Pythias are the classical friendship story: Damon stood surety with his own life for a condemned friend and the tyrant, moved, released them both. That is the whole of the name's ancient reputation, and it is a good one. The name entered English use through the pastoral poetry of the Renaissance, where Damon is a stock shepherd, and became an ordinary American name in the twentieth century. Daimon appears as a spelling only in the twentieth century, with its small peak in the mid-1970s, and it belongs to the same period as Daymon and Damion. The Greek daimōn, meanwhile, has an entirely separate literary life through Socrates and through Jung.

Meaningscholars disagree

To tame, to subdue

The classical name Damon, Δάμων, is generally derived from damaō, to tame or subdue. The spelling Daimon coincides with the separate Greek word daimōn, a guiding spirit or lesser divinity, which passed into Latin as daemon and into English as demon with its sense reversed by Christian usage. Sources disagree about whether the modern respelling is a deliberate borrowing of that second word or simply an American variant of Damon.

Daimon sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2003, with 33 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Daimon went to 18 boys in 2025, but Daymon is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 37, which makes it the 891st most-given boys’ name of the year — 4,317 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 46,164 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 94,893 for Daimon itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The classical Damon is a byword for loyalty, which is a rare thing for a name to carry.
  • It is easy to say and needs no introduction.
  • The spelling looks distinct without changing the sound.
What to consider
  • The letters daimon are one step from demon, and a schoolyard will make that step.
  • Damon is the standard spelling and will be written instead.
  • The two Greek words behind the two spellings are unrelated, which invites a claim about meaning that is not supportable.
