The story of Daymon
The story of Damon and Pythias was told and retold in the ancient world as the model of friendship, and it kept the name in literary use through the Renaissance, when English pastoral poetry used Damon for a shepherd. It became an American first name in the twentieth century and rose in the seventies and eighties, at which point the respellings began: Daymon, Daemon, Damion and Damian all sit near each other in American records, though the last is a different name.
Meaning
to tame, to subdue
Greek damao, to tame or subdue, gives Damon. It is unrelated to daimon, a spirit, from which English gets demon, despite the resemblance; the two words are distinct in Greek.

About 1 boy in 46,164 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 89,899 for Daymon itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Jene test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back.
