The story of Thierry
Theodoric the Ostrogoth was the most successful of the Germanic rulers who took over the western empire, and his name spread across the whole Germanic world: Dietrich in German, Diederik in Dutch, Theodoric in Latin, and in French a steady contraction through Thierri to Thierry. It was among the ordinary French names of the medieval period and revived strongly in the twentieth century. It came to American records with French, Belgian, Haitian and West African families.

The Kelso test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Thierry's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Kelso climbed just as high around 1933, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Kelso's path sketches the road Thierry is walking now.
Thierry sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- It carries a documented sixth-century king and a tomb that still stands.
- It is the same name as Dietrich and Derek, which very few people realize.
- It is unmistakably French while being short and easy to write.
- English speakers say the th as in think, which French never does.
- It is regularly replaced with Terry, which severs the connection entirely.
- The stress at the end is flattened in American speech.
