The story of Dagoberto
Dagobert I united the Frankish kingdoms, moved the capital to Paris, patronized the abbey of Saint-Denis where he was buried, and was the last Merovingian to exercise real power; after him the mayors of the palace ran everything and the kings became figureheads, which is why later chroniclers called them the do-nothing kings. His actual reputation was mixed and includes a great deal of confiscated church property. What everyone in France knows instead is the song, Le bon roi Dagobert, written in the eighteenth century, in which the king puts his breeches on inside out and Saint Eloi points it out; it was banned under Napoleon for mocking monarchy and is now a standard nursery rhyme. It is a fair illustration of how historical memory actually works: one seventh-century king survives in general knowledge, and it is because of his trousers.

The Hewitt test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Dagoberto's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Hewitt climbed just as high around 1914, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Hewitt's path sketches the road Dagoberto is walking now.
