Cyle
Masculine · “Gaelic caol”
Cyle is overwhelmingly a boys’ name — 1,980 boys against 15 girls since 1880.
Kyle is a narrow place. In Scottish Gaelic caol means slender, and as a noun it names a strait: the Kyle of Lochalsh, the Kyles of Bute, the narrow water between an island and the mainland. Scotland has given English a whole set of names that are simply features of ground, and Kyle is one of the plainest.

The story of Cyle
Scotland exported its landscape into the English name stock more successfully than almost anywhere else. Blair is a plain, Craig is a rock, Glen is a valley, Ross is a headland, Muir is a moor, Lennox is a place of elms, Kyle is a strait, and Douglas is a dark stream. Each became a surname by being where a family lived, then a given name by the ordinary route. This is not a Scottish habit but an English and American one: the Scots themselves used patronymics. What made these particular words travel is that they are short, they contain no sounds foreign to English, and they arrived attached to families with visible histories. The respelling with c does something the Gaelic never did. Gaelic uses c for a hard k in every position and has no soft c at all, so the spelling Cyle is legible only through English conventions, and through those it is ambiguous.
Meaning
Gaelic caol, narrow or a strait
From Scottish Gaelic caol, narrow, used as a noun for a strait or narrow channel, and also the name of a district of Ayrshire. The surname is territorial, from the district. Cyle is an American respelling substituting c for k, which introduces an ambiguity the original does not have, since c before y is normally soft in English. It peaks in 1990.

The Nikia test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Cyle's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Nikia climbed just as high around 1975, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Nikia's path sketches the road Cyle is walking now.
Cyle sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
