Our story of Coty
François Coty was a Corsican with a scent nobody would stock. The story, which he encouraged, is that he took a bottle into a Paris department store, dropped it on the floor, and let the women around the counter do the rest; the shop ordered it that afternoon. What is certain is that he changed the business. He commissioned Lalique to make the bottles, sold at prices ordinary women could reach rather than at couture prices, and built one of the first modern cosmetics empires out of it. He also bought newspapers and spent a good deal of the money on far-right politics, which is the part the company histories tend to skip.

It may be a respelling of Cody, an Irish surname, or a use of the perfume name, or a build on the sound. The record holds it for both sexes and explains none of the possibilities.

Two syllables with the stress in front. The perfume house is said the French way, koh-TEE, which occasionally confuses matters.

The Gayle test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Coty's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Gayle climbed just as high around 1936, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Gayle's path sketches the road Coty is walking now.
Coty sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- It is read correctly at first sight and never needs spelling twice.
- It is short, quick to write and easy for a child to learn early.
- It is recorded for boys and for girls, so it does not force a reading on anyone.
- The cosmetics brand is the first association for a great many people, particularly older ones.
- Cody and Kody are both far commoner, so the name will be heard as one of them.
- No origin is documented, so the meaning question has several candidates and no answer.
