Where it comes from

The story of Gayle

Abigail went out of English use for two centuries because seventeenth-century plays used it so often for a lady's maid that abigail became a common noun for one. By the time it returned, the short form had a life of its own, and Gail became enormously well used in mid-century America with most bearers christened nothing longer. The three spellings then divided informally: Gale for the word and for boys, Gail for the plain name, and Gayle for the most decorated version, which is the one that reads least like weather.

Meaning

my father is joy

Hebrew Avigayil joins av, father, with a word about rejoicing — my father is joy, or my father rejoices. The Abigail of the books of Samuel is one of the few women in the Hebrew Bible whose intelligence is the point of her scene; she talks David out of a massacre with an argument the text plainly admires. The meaning is settled. The wind and the surname Gale are separate words entirely.

Gayle sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1934, with 169 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Gayle sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Abigail is available as a formal long form with a documented and admirable biblical bearer.
  • One syllable and a completely settled sound, never mispronounced.
  • The y and the e separate the name from the weather word on the page, which the plain spelling does not.
What to consider
  • Three spellings compete and none is standard, so the name is dictated every time.
  • It is very strongly associated with the mid twentieth century and dates a person closely.
  • This spelling is recorded for boys as well, so on a form it settles less than it appears to.
