Codi trims Cody to the bare -i ending, and the underlying name has a genuine Irish etymology that almost nobody associates with it. Ó Cuidighthigh means descendant of the helpful one — from a word for help or assistance — which is a good deal gentler than the frontier association the name now carries.

Where it comes from

The story of Codi

The surname reached America with Irish emigration and became internationally famous through William Cody, whose Wild West show toured Europe and America from 1883 and made the name a shorthand for the frontier. It became a large American boys' name in the 1980s and 1990s. Respellings followed: Kody, Codey, Codie, Codi. The bare -i ending is the one that reads as most modern and also as most unisex, and Codi appears in both columns, peaking for boys in 1993.

Irish "descendant of the helpful one"

Cody is generally from Ó Cuidighthigh, from cuidightheach, helpful or assisting. A second derivation takes it from Ó Cuidighthigh's variant Mac Óda, son of Odo. Both are Irish and both are plausible; the helpful reading is the more commonly cited. The -i spelling has no separate origin.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Codi went to 11 boys in 2025, but Cody, Kody and Kodi and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 5 spellings went to 1,385, which makes it the 254th most-given boys’ name of the year — 6,940 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 1,233 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 155,280 for Codi itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The Irish etymology is genuinely appealing — the helpful one.
  • It is short, four letters, and impossible to mispronounce.
  • The -i ending makes it work for both sexes.
What to consider
  • Cody is far more common and will be written instead.
  • The -i ending reads as female to some Americans.
  • The 1993 peak dates it to a specific decade.
