Four spellings of this name exist and this is the one that matches nothing. The Irish surname is spelled one way, the Scottish landscape word another, and Corry with a doubled r and a y follows neither convention. It is an American spelling of a sound, arrived at without reference to either source.

Where it comes from

The story of Corry

The name got a considerable push in the middle of the nineteen-seventies from a film about a Dutch family of watchmakers who hid people above their shop during the occupation and were sent to the camps for it. The daughter who survived spent the rest of her life speaking about it, wrote the book the film was taken from, and carried this name in its Dutch spelling. The film was distributed widely through churches rather than cinemas, which is exactly the kind of circulation that moves a name without leaving a mark in the usual places, and the record shows the name peaking within a couple of years of it.

Two unrelated sources are available — an Irish surname and a Scottish word for a hollow in a hill — and this spelling matches neither closely enough to claim one. With the route unidentifiable, no sense can be passed on.

Corry sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1977, with 101 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Corry sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is short, warm and completely unisex without straining for it.
  • The sound is settled even though the spelling is not.
  • It works for a child and an adult without changing register.
What to consider
  • Corey, Cory and Corrie are all commoner and this spelling gets corrected.
  • No meaning can be given honestly, because the source cannot be identified.
  • Most children with this spelling are boys, but a real minority are girls; either may be taken for the other.
