Where it comes from

The story of Codi

Ó Cuidighthigh and Ó Cúda were Irish families whose names both became Cody in English. The surname reached America with Irish emigration, and a nineteenth-century showman made it famous across the world with a traveling exhibition of the American West. It moved into given-name use for boys in the 1980s and, in the spellings Codi, Codie and Cody, for girls at the same time.

descendant of the helpful one

The usual derivation is Irish Ó Cuidighthigh, built on a word meaning helpful. A second line takes it from Ó Cúda, of uncertain meaning. Both were anglicized as Cody, and the two families are distinct.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Codi went to 44 girls in 2025, but Kodi, Cody and Kody and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 5 spellings went to 263, which makes it the 702nd most-given girls’ name of the year — 2,757 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 6,111 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 36,529 for Codi itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
