Where it comes from

The story of Kody

The O Cuidighthigh were a Munster family and the surname is common in Ireland. William Frederick Cody, born in Iowa in 1846, was a scout, buffalo hunter and showman whose Wild West exhibition toured America and Europe from 1883 to 1913 and shaped the world's picture of the American frontier more than any other single source. Cody, Wyoming, is named for him. The given name rose sharply in America from the 1970s, and the K respelling belongs to the wave that followed, along with a small girls' share that peaked around 1990 and then faded.

descendant of the helpful one

The likeliest source is Irish O Cuidighthigh, from cuidightheach, 'helper, one who gives assistance' — so descendant of the helpful one. A second route runs through Mac Oda, from the Germanic name Odo, which came to Ireland with Norman settlers. Both are attested and English clerks anglicized both as Cody. The K spelling is entirely American and modern.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Kody went to 19 girls in 2025, but Kodi, Codi and Cody and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 5 spellings went to 263, which makes it the 702nd most-given girls’ name of the year — 5,414 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 6,111 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 84,593 for Kody itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
