Chloe was an epithet of Demeter in her aspect as goddess of the young green corn, and it survived into ordinary Greek use as a personal name. Paul's First Letter to the Corinthians mentions a Chloe whose household sent him news, which carried the name into Christian use and eventually onto seventeenth-century English registers. It stayed rare until the late twentieth century, then rose steeply on both sides of the Atlantic and entered the American top ten in the 2000s. Very popular names generate respellings — the more common the sound, the more parents look for a spelling of their own — and the doubled -ee ending was the device most readily to hand, already in service on Kylee, Rylee and Aubree.
