The story of Chassidy
Chesed is one of the central terms of Hebrew ethics and it is famously hard to translate: loving-kindness, steadfast love, covenant loyalty, mercy, all of them partial. The King James translators used lovingkindness, a word they had to invent. A chasid is a person who acts with chesed, and the term was taken up in the eighteenth century by the movement founded by the Baal Shem Tov in Podolia, which became Hasidism. Latin castus is a different world entirely: it means pure or morally correct, and gives chaste, chastity, chasten and, through a different sense, caste, borrowed into English from Portuguese casta, unmixed. The English virtue name Chastity belongs to the Puritan tradition of Faith, Prudence and Mercy, and its respelling here happens to land on the other word, which is worth saying because reference books sometimes conflate them.
