Cameroon has nothing to do with Cameron. Portuguese sailors reached the Wouri estuary in 1472, found it full of prawns, and called it Rio dos Camaroes, the river of shrimp. An entire country is named after shellfish, and it merely looks like a Scottish surname.

Where it comes from

The story of Cameryn

Portuguese navigators working down the West African coast in the 1470s named places for what they found. The estuary of the Wouri was thick with a large freshwater prawn, so they called it Rio dos Camaroes, the river of prawns; the name spread to the region, was taken over by German colonists as Kamerun and by the French as Cameroun, and became Cameroon in English. Nothing about it is African in origin and nothing about it is Scottish. The Gaelic name is a separate matter entirely: cam sron, a crooked nose, is a personal nickname of the kind that produced dozens of Highland surnames, alongside Campbell, cam beul, crooked mouth, and Kennedy, ceann eidigh, ugly head. Highland naming was direct about physical description in a way that later bearers of the names generally are not told.

Meaning

Gaelic cam sron, crooked nose

Cameryn is a respelling of Cameron, from Scottish Gaelic cam sron, crooked or bent nose, a nickname that became a clan name. The -eryn ending replaces -eron without changing the sound, since the final syllables are unstressed. The African country Cameroon is unrelated, from Portuguese camaroes, prawns. The peak of this spelling is 2009.

Cameryn sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2009, with 58 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Cameryn went to 8 boys in 2025, but Kameryn is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 20, which makes it the 908th most-given boys’ name of the year — 8,002 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 85,404 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 213,510 for Cameryn itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
