Rasean puts an American prefix in front of the Irish form of John, spelled as an American reader would need it. The letters at the back happen to spell a French river, and English has a second word spelled the same way that has nothing to do with it.

Where it comes from

Our story of Rasean

A seine is a fishing net — a long wall of mesh with floats along the top and weights along the bottom, drawn round a body of water and hauled in, one of the oldest fishing methods there is. The word came into English from Latin and Greek, where it named the same object, and it has nothing whatever to do with the river that runs through Paris. That name is Gaulish and considerably older than any of the languages now spoken along it; the Romans wrote it Sequana and treated it as a goddess with a healing sanctuary at the source, where excavations have turned up hundreds of wooden and stone models of diseased limbs left by people hoping for a cure. Two words, one spelling, and the older of them is a river that people used to pray to.

Meaningnot established

Not established

The base is the Irish form of John, which carries a Hebrew meaning several removes back. The prefix is a free American element with no content of its own. The compound has no documented source, and the French river inside the spelling is a coincidence of letters.

Two syllables with the stress at the back. The base is spelled the Irish way here, which English readers regularly misread as see-an, and that is a different name.

Fashion outlook

Rasean sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Back stress gives the name a firm shape and real carrying power.
  • Sean detaches at once and is understood everywhere.
  • The prefix is light, so the name is quick to say.
What to consider
  • The Irish spelling of the base is regularly misread by people who have not met it.
  • Rashaun, Rashawn and Raysean are all recorded and will be written for it.
  • Only the base carries a meaning, and it carries it at several removes.
