The story of Cameran
Descriptive bynames were the ordinary way of distinguishing people before surnames were fixed, and they were frequently unflattering because a distinguishing feature is more useful than a pleasant one. Gaelic society produced a long list: cam, crooked, in Cameron and Campbell; dubh, black, in Duff and Dow; ruadh, red, in Roy and Rae; beag, small, in Begg; mor, big, in More. When surnames became hereditary in the medieval period, whatever byname a family happened to carry became permanent, and the description stopped applying to anybody. The Campbells became one of the most powerful families in Scotland under a name meaning crooked mouth, and nobody appears to have found this a problem. The alternative derivations sometimes offered for these names, from place names or from more dignified sources, are generally attempts to escape the obvious one.

Gaelic cam sron, crooked nose
The Highland Clan Cameron's name is generally derived from Scottish Gaelic cam, crooked or bent, and sron, a nose. A separate Lowland Cameron is a place name in Fife. Campbell is from cam beul, crooked mouth, and Kennedy from a phrase meaning ugly or helmeted head. Cameran is a modern American respelling; the name crossed to girls in the 1990s and this spelling peaks for girls in 2004.
