Where it comes from

The story of Arianne

Ariadne gives Theseus the thread, he kills the Minotaur and gets out, and then abandons her on Naxos on the way home — where Dionysus finds her, marries her, and sets her crown among the stars as the Corona Borealis. French gives Arianne and Ariane, and a European rocket family carries the latter. It appears in American records from the 1970s.

Meaningscholars disagree

most holy

Generally read from Greek ari, an intensifying prefix, with a Cretan element related to holy. The second half may belong to the language spoken on Crete before Greek, which would place the name among the oldest in the corpus.

Arianne sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1990, with 137 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Arianne went to 34 girls in 2025, but Ariane is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 52, which makes it the 908th most-given girls’ name of the year — 3,264 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 30,909 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 47,273 for Arianne itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A genuinely famous Greek figure with a very good story behind her.
  • Ari and Anne are both complete short forms in their own right.
  • Read correctly on sight by most English speakers.
What to consider
  • Arianna and Ariana are both far more common in America.
  • The French and American pronunciations differ at the stress.
  • The story involves her being abandoned, which some will find sour.
