Within about thirty years of this name entering the record, a Japanese noodle-seller's son had worked out how to make pearls on purpose and destroyed an industry that had existed for four thousand years.

Where it comes from

The story of Pearlean

Kokichi Mikimoto spent years dropping irritants into oysters in Ago Bay and getting nothing back but dead oysters, until he produced first a half-pearl and then, at the turn of the century, a whole round one. The natural pearl trade did not believe him; there were court cases in Paris about whether a cultured pearl could be called a pearl at all. Within a generation the price of natural pearls had collapsed, the diving economies of the Persian Gulf had gone with them, and the jewel that had been a byword for rarity since antiquity was something a shop assistant could own.

Meaningscholars disagree

pearl, with an ending

The front is the English word, which was one of the standard American jewel names of the period alongside Ruby, Opal and Beryl. The ending was attaching itself to almost anything in the same decades and belongs to the same workshop that produced Earlean, Verlean and Alean. The compound has no meaning beyond its front half, and no reference work carries it — which is the ordinary condition of names made this way and not a mark against them.

How the name formed

  1. pearl established as an English jewel name
  2. a productive American ending attaches to it
  3. Pearlean appears in the record in the 1900s
  4. cultured pearls collapse the natural pearl trade
  5. the name fades after the middle of the century

Pearlean sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1939, with 37 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Pearlean sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Pearl is waiting inside it and is thoroughly fashionable again.
  • It is read correctly at sight despite being genuinely rare.
  • It belongs to a real and well-documented period of American naming.
What to consider
  • Pearline is commoner and will be substituted in writing.
  • The ending has no meaning and cannot be explained to a curious child.
  • It is firmly of the first half of the last century.
