The story of Cameran
The Dress Act of 1746 banned tartan and Highland clothing in Scotland after the Jacobite defeat, and it stood until 1782. What returned afterwards was not what had been suppressed. Tartan became a national costume rather than a regional cloth, and the idea that each clan had always owned a specific pattern was assembled during the nineteenth century, encouraged by the royal visit of 1822 and by the manufacturers who supplied it. The Vestiarium Scoticum, published in 1842 by two brothers claiming descent from the Stuarts, purported to reproduce an ancient manuscript listing clan setts; it was a forgery, and a great many modern clan tartans descend from it. Clan Cameron's own name is older and plainer, and describes a nose.
