Where it comes from

The story of Briza

The vocabulary of storms is a record of European maritime contact. Hurricane comes from Taino hurakan by way of Spanish, picked up in the Caribbean in the sixteenth century. Monsoon is Arabic mawsim, a season, through Portuguese, learned on the Indian Ocean routes. Typhoon has a contested history involving Chinese tai fung, a great wind, Arabic tufan, and Greek Typhon, the monster, and it may be a collision of all three. Tornado is a garbled Spanish tronada, a thunderstorm, reshaped in English by association with tornar, to turn. Doldrums is native English but obscure. Breeze itself may be Spanish or Portuguese briza, a north-east wind, or may not be; the etymology is not settled. English had plenty of its own weather words and borrowed anyway, because the phenomena were met abroad.

Spanish brisa, a breeze

Briza is most likely from Spanish brisa, a breeze, a word of uncertain origin that English borrowed as breeze in the sixteenth century. Briza is also the botanical genus of quaking grass. The name is used chiefly in Mexico and the American Southwest. The peak is 2000.

About 1 girl in 11,732 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 160,727 for Briza itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
