Our story of Briasia
English gained the zh sound late and by accident. In Middle English, words like vision, measure and pleasure were said with an s or z followed by a y-glide: vi-zyon, mea-zyure. Around the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries that glide merged into the preceding consonant across a whole class of words, producing a new consonant the language had never had. The same process turned ty into ch in nature and question, and dy into j in soldier and educate. Because the sound arrived after English spelling had already settled, it never got a letter: it is written si in vision, su in measure, ge in beige, s in Asia, and z in azure. That is why a name using it has to gamble. Nothing in the spelling of Briasia tells a first-time reader whether to say zh, z or sh, and all three are heard.
