The story of Bren
The Navigatio Sancti Brendani was written around the ninth century and survives in well over a hundred manuscripts, which makes it one of the most copied texts of the middle ages. It describes a seven-year voyage west from Ireland in a currach, a wooden frame covered in ox hides, past an island of sheep, a column of crystal in the sea, a region of fire and smoke, and a great fish the monks camp on. Tim Severin built such a boat in 1976, using tanned hides stitched over an ash frame, and sailed from Ireland by way of the Hebrides, the Faroes, Iceland and Greenland to Newfoundland, arriving in 1977. He did not claim Brendan had made the trip, only that the boat could, and along the way met an iceberg, a whale and volcanic islands that fitted the text uncomfortably well.

Bren is a short form of Brendan, Irish Brenainn, generally derived from a Brittonic word related to Welsh brenhin, a prince or king. It also serves for Brennan and Brenton. The derivation is not certain and other sources have been proposed. The American peak is 1964.
