Where it comes from

The story of Braydyn

The Salmon of Knowledge lived in a pool of the Boyne and had eaten the hazelnuts of wisdom that fell into it. The poet Finn Eces spent seven years trying to catch it, succeeded, and gave it to his young pupil to cook with instructions not to eat any. The boy burned his thumb on the hot fish, put it in his mouth, and absorbed the salmon's knowledge; thereafter he had only to bite his thumb to know anything. The boy was Fionn mac Cumhaill, and the thumb-biting recurs throughout the Fenian cycle. The story is a close cousin of the Welsh tale of Gwion Bach and Ceridwen's cauldron, and of the Norse Sigurd tasting the dragon's blood, all of which involve accidental knowledge acquired through a burned finger, which suggests a shared inheritance rather than borrowing.

Irish bradan, a salmon

Braydyn is a respelling of Braden, from Irish O Bradain, descendant of Bradan, a personal name from bradan, a salmon. An English source, from a place name meaning broad valley, is also possible. Both y's in this spelling replace vowels without changing the sound. The peak is 2010.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Braydyn went to 7 boys in 2025, but Braydin is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 12, which makes it the 916th most-given boys’ name of the year — 8,798 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 142,340 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 244,011 for Braydyn itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
