Where it comes from

The story of Betina

Bene dicere, to speak well, gave benedicere, to bless, and from it benediction, benedictus and the name Benedict. The pattern runs through Latin: benevolent is well-wishing, benign is well-born or kindly, benefit is a good deed, benefactor a doer of good, and benefice a church living. Their opposites are built with male: malediction, malevolent, malign, malefactor. English has both sets and uses them differently, keeping the bene- words in ordinary speech and the male- words for something closer to formal accusation. Shakespeare's Benedick in Much Ado gave English a word for a newly married man who had sworn he never would, which was in ordinary use for two centuries. St Benedict, whose rule shaped Western monasticism from the sixth century, is the reason the name spread at all.

Latin benedictus, blessed

Betina is a spelling of Bettina, an Italian diminutive of Benedetta, from Latin benedictus, blessed or well spoken of, and also of Elisabetta. Which parent name a bearer has is not recoverable from the record. The single t is an American respelling of the Italian doubled one. The peak is 1966.

Three syllables, stress on the second. Italian holds the doubled t longer than English does, which is why the single-t spelling looks abbreviated to Italian readers.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Betina went to 10 girls in 2025, but Bettina is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 19, which makes it the 941st most-given girls’ name of the year — 8,516 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 84,593 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 160,727 for Betina itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
