The story of Arland
Roland joins hrod, fame, to land, territory, and the man himself was a real Frankish march-warden killed in a rearguard action at Roncevaux in 778, an event of no importance recorded in one line by Charlemagne's biographer. Three centuries later the Chanson de Roland turned it into the founding poem of French literature, and the name spread across Europe with the story. In Italy it became Orlando, by a consonant exchange that also gives Italian Aldo beside German Aldo and turns some initial r sounds to l; Boiardo and then Ariosto made Orlando the hero of the greatest Italian romances of the Renaissance. So a minor border skirmish produced a name borne by millions, and it is carried in two forms that no ordinary speaker would recognize as one.

Germanic land, territory
Arland is most likely a variant of Arlan or Harland, or a reshaping of Erland, a Norse name meaning foreigner or stranger. The -land ending is a genuine Germanic element meaning land or territory, seen in Roland, Leland, Garland and Rowland. Which of the several possible sources applies to an American bearer is not recoverable. The peak is 1935.

Arland's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Armin climbed just as high around 1914, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Armin's path sketches the road Arland is walking now.
Arland sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
