The story of Anden
The North Germanic languages developed a suffixed definite article, which is unusual in Europe and shared with Romanian, Albanian and Bulgarian. In Danish, hus is a house and huset the house; bil is a car and bilen the car; kvinde a woman and kvinden the woman. Norwegian and Swedish work the same way, and Swedish can mark definiteness twice, with both a preceding article and the suffix, when an adjective intervenes. The suffix descends from a demonstrative pronoun that followed the noun in Old Norse and fused to it, which is exactly what happened to Latin ille at the front of Romance nouns, only in the other direction. So two branches of Indo-European built definite articles out of the same kind of word at roughly the same period and attached them to opposite ends.

Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Anden's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Rumaldo climbed just as high around 1950, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Rumaldo's path sketches the road Anden is walking now.
Anden sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
