Where it comes from

The story of Andee

Greek made adjectives from nouns freely, and andreios, manly, was one of the standard virtue words, closer to courageous than to male in everyday use; the abstract noun andreia is one of the four cardinal virtues in Plato. The apostle's name carried it across Europe. What happened next depended on the language: Italian kept Andrea masculine and formed Andreina for women, while English formed Andrea as a feminine in the eighteenth century and it became widespread in the twentieth. Andee is a clipped and respelled form of the English feminine, and its best year in United States records is 1995.

Meaning

manly, of a man

From Greek andreios, manly or courageous, from aner, genitive andros, a man. The apostle Andrew carried the Greek Andreas. Italian, and to a lesser extent German and Dutch, kept Andrea as the masculine form, while English, Spanish and the Slavic languages built a feminine from it. Both are correct within their own traditions and they mean the same thing.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A settled Greek meaning and one of the twelve apostles behind the family.
  • Short, warm and completely familiar to every English speaker.
  • The double e marks it as a woman's spelling, which Andy does not.
What to consider
  • Andy is read as a man's name and Andee will be written as Andy constantly.
  • The name means manly, which is worth knowing before explaining it.
  • It reads as a short form, so people will ask for the full version.
